Design Automation Developer

We are currently seeking two Software Developers to join our growing BIM + Design Technology team, part of Arup’s Technical Software Group.  The role is part of a global Design Automation initiative and would involve working directly with engineering teams to apply your software development skills to help solve complex workflow, data or geometry challenges.
 
We currently have one position available within our London Office, with the second in Manchester. Both positions will be working closely with project teams across the UK region, and as part of a virtual team with colleagues in all Arup regions (Americas, Australasia, East Asia, Europe and United Kingdom, Middle East, Africa).
 
Role
 
In this role, you will be responsible for:
  • working directly with end-users, and enjoy learning about their needs
  • working in a fast paced environment to take charge, define the solution and then deliver tools to automate tasks for those users
  • applying technologies such as, Net in a number of scenarios (desktop, web, cloud) and tools such as Microsoft Excel
  • identifying recurrent problems and see opportunities for delivering a generic solution.
     
    To be successful, you will need to be comfortable with:
  • A high level of autonomy
  • Managing your day to day workload, and priorities.
  • Promoting the work you do across the office and across the region, in order to uncover more challenges and opportunities to tackle.
     
    However you won’t be alone. 
  • You will be working as part of a remote team of developers, and co-located with your end-users
  • You will report to the BIM + Design Technology team leader based in London to provide oversight, and look for opportunities to share work or solutions with your peers.

Requirements and skills
 
Essentials about you:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering
    or Bachelor’s Degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline, with demonstrated experience in delivering a variety of technical software projects
  • 4+ years demonstrable proficiency in two or more of the following languages: C# (or VB.NET), Python, Javascript, Excel VBA, C, C++, Java
  • Experience with developing addins hosted within another application and/or experience with developing Windows desktop applications.
  • Experience with Cloud Hosting and Deployment (e.g. AWS, Azure, Heroku), PaaS and SaaS
  • Experience with Web Application and Server Architectures (e.g. MVC, REST APIs, Apache, Nginx, IIS), but curious about ‘serverless’ solutions such as AWS Lambda
  • Experience using SQL (SQL Server, MySQL, Postgres) and/or NoSQL (HBase, Redis, MongoDB) data stores
  • Experience in at least one scripting language (Python, Perl, BASH, PowerShell, PHP)
  • Experienced with source code control (git, svn)
  • Strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive.
 
Bonus points that will make you stand out:
  • If you have worked in an Architecture, Engineering or Construction firm
  • If you have worked with software typical to AEC industry – Revit, Rhino, AutoCAD, Microstation, various BIM interfaces
  • If you have worked with 3d modelling software or games engines (Unity3d, Unreal Engine)
  • If you can undertake simple UI designs for software you create
  • If you have cross-platform mobile experience
  • If you have presented your work at conferences or have experience in open source.
  • If you enjoy building a personal network across the business, and can evangelize the role of technology in delivering efficiency and innovation.
